Aboriginal kunstverzameling terug naar Australië?
Dr.Edward Ruhe bracht een van de grootste collecties Aboriginal kunst buiten Australië bijeen. Australië probeert nu deze nalatenschap van de in juli 1989 overleden Ruhe in bezit te krijgen. De verzameling, die in een bankkluis in Washington opgeborgen is, zou in het South Australian Museum in Adelaide moeten komen. De collectie van professor Ruhe bevat meer dan 900 werken, waaronder 300 boombast-schilderijen en ongeveer 600 voorwerpen (als beeldhouwwerken wapens en gereedschappen), boeken en manuscripten. Ruhe kocht de bestaande verzamelingen van Davidson, Spence en Allen op. Hij vulde die aan met eigen aankopen in 1965, 1972 en 1982. De in de Ruhe-collectie opgenomen werken vertegenwoordigen een gebied dat strekt van Melville eiland in het uiterste noorden, Arnhem Land in het oosten en Centraal Australi in het zuiden. De erfgenamen hebben een Japans bod van 1,2 miljoen dollar afgeslagen. Ruhe's familie heeft zich bereid verklaard de collectie aan het South Australian Museum over te willen dragen voor 750.000 dollar. Het Museum poogt daartoe de nodige fondsen te verwerven. De premier van South Australia, Bannon, omschreef de Ruhe-collectie als "a vital an irreplaceable part of Australia's heritage". (Land Rights News, February 1990)
Musea in de Pacific
Welke rol vervullen musea als culturele instellingen in de Pacific? Het eerste nummer in 1990 van het door Unesco uitgegeven tijdschrift Museum is gedeeltelijk gewijd aan 'Museum issues in the Pacific'. Paaseiland
De tentoonstelling 'Paaseiland, een raadsel?' welke dit voorjaar gehouden werd in het Koninklijk Museum voor Kunst en Geschiedenis te Brussel heeft wellicht opnieuw belangstelling opgeroepen voor de mysterin van dit eiland, dat in 1722 door Jacob Roggeveen ontdekt werd. De Nijmeegse vereniging van studenten antropologie Quetzalcoatl organiseerde een excursie naar de tentoonstelling in Brussel. Zie het verslag van Erwin Hagenbeek in Cultus, 1 (1), juni 1990, pp.17-18). The Centre for South Pacific Studies Newsletter (1990, vol.4, nr.1) maakt melding van de volgende publicaties over Paaseiland: The Kon-Tiki Museum Occasional Papers (1989, vol.1) bevat twee papers van de hand van Arne Skjolsvold en Gonzalo Figueroa, en van Thor Heyerdahl, Arne Skjolsvold en Pavel Pavel over resp. een knielend en een "wandelend" beeld (moai) van Paaseilend. Health in the tropics
De Research School of Pacific Studies van de Australian National University heeft een beknopte gids met gezondheidstips uitgegeven voor veldwerkers in de tropen. De gids telt 30 bladzijden en heet Health in the tropics. A survival guide for travellers and field workers. De eerste editie is van december 1989, maar het is de bedoeling dat de gids steeds up-to-date gehouden wordt. "The Guide begins with some general advice and information about ways to stay healthy. This is followed by a selection of major tropical illnesses and other health risks. Included are general descriptions of these and how the infecting organisms are spread, symptoms identification and treatment - including details of self-treatment if found to be necessary. Included also is clear information about inoculations and other forms or protection." Een exemplaar van deze gids is opgenomen in de bibliotheek maatschappij-wetenschappen, K.U. Nijmegen.
The Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research
Op 1 maart 1990 is in Canberra het Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (CAEPR) opgericht. Het centrum, dat door de Australische overheid gefinancierd wordt, zal de economische kanten van het beleid ten aanzien van Aborigines gaan onderzoeken. De analyses door een interdisciplinaire staf hebben tot doel om middels beleidsaanbevelingen de effectiviteit van dat beleid te vergroten. Het centrum is gehuisvest in het Department of Prehgistory and Anthropology van de Australian National University.
Chronologisch overzicht gebeurtenissen Zuid-Pacific (1988-1989)
Dr.Kai M. Schellhorn heeft een chronologisch overzicht samengesteld van de belangrijkste gebeurtenissen in het zuiden van de Pacific in de periode van 24 september 1987 tot en met 31 december 1989. Dit overzicht is gepubliceerd als Sonderheft S 40- door de Deutsch Pazifische Gesellschaft (januari 1990). Multiculturalism and the law in Australia
"The Australian Law Reform Commission will examine if and how national family contract and criminal laws are appropriate to a multicultural society. The Commission will look particularly at implicit cultural assumptions of the law and legal systems and whether they unintentionally disadvantage some Australians. The study is part of the national agenda for a multicultural Australia. (...) The Commission said the inquiry's main aims were to promote a tolerant, environment which accepted social and cultural associated rights of individuals." Stanner's On Aboriginal Religion weer verkrijgbaar
On Aboriginal Religion verscheen eerst als een reeks artikelen in het tijdschrift Oceania (1959-1963). In 1963 werden deze artikelen herdrukt als een afzonderlijke monografie, voorzien van een beknopt voorwoord door de auteur. In 1966 volgde een tweede druk van deze monografie (Oceania Monographs, Number 11). De essays van de Australische antropoloog W.E.H. Stanner, gebundeld in On Aboriginal Religion, hebben een groot aantal auteurs op het gebied van Aboriginal studies sterk beinvloed. Het werk is gebaseerd op Stanner's veldonbderzoek bij de Murinbata in het Daly River gebied (noord-westen van de Northern Territory), Howard Morphy heeft de betekenis van het werk van Stanner besproken in zijn artikel 'The resurrection of the Hydra: twenty-five years of research on Aboriginal Religion' (in: R.M. Berndt & R.Tonkinson (eds.), Social Anthropology and Australian Aboriginal Studies. Canberra: Aboriginal Studies Press. 1988, pp. 241-266). De voorgaande oplagen waren beperkt en snel uitverkocht. Lange tijd was On Aboriginal Religion niet verkrijgbaar. Na Stanner's dood in 1981 verkreeg Oceania toestemming van diens weduwe om het werk in een herdruk uit te brengen. De klassieke monografie is nu opnieuw verschenen, voorzien van een 'appreciation' door Francesca Merlan en een voorwoord door Les Hiatt: W.E.H. Pitcairn
The UNSW Centre for South Pacific Studies Newsletter, 4(2) 1990, meldt het bestaan van The Pitcairn Miscellany; "The Pitcairn Miscellany is the sole periodical to come from Pitcairn Island, whose fame rests largely on it being of the eventual homes of the famous mutineers on the Bounty. The publication is written and printed about ten times each year, though it can be sent only when ships turn up, so one's envelope may contain two or three issues. The Miscellany usually consists of two pages, printed both sides, and carries local news of contests, Pitcairners overseas and reflections on life on the remote spot, with under seventy inhabitants. A special feature is the listing of ship arrivals & departures. "The Centre for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa invites applications for Rockefeller Residency Fellowships in the Humanities. The Project Irian Jaya Studies (IRIS)
In 1987 the Project Irian Jaya Studies (IRIS) was initiated by the Irian Jaya Study Centre (IJSC), Jayapura - Indonesia, and the Department of Languages and Cultures of South-East Asia and Oceania (DSALCUL), Leiden University. The project is implemented by DSALCUL and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), and will be carried out, in Jakarta, in cooperation with the Department of Anthropology of the 'Universitas Indonesia' (UI), and, in Irian Jaya, in cooperation with the IJSC and the 'Universitas Cenderawasih' (UNCEN). The cooperation will extend from 1990 to 1994 inclusive. The project will be financed by the Indonesian and Dutch government.
The aim of IRIS is the upgrading of the IJSC as a research, documentation and advisory centre with regard to 'culture, language and development' in Irian Jaya, To achieve this aim, it is intended that the following activities will be carried out:
1. to develop a professional staff of scholars and development experts/cultural engineers,
2. to establish an adequate IJSC documentation centre,
3. to improve the IJSC Library collections,
4. to distribute relevant information in a series 'Irian Jaya Source Materials'.
The project involves a postgraduate education program in anthropology and development, including field research training in Irian Jaya.

Schenking boeken
Jan Pouwer heeft zijn uitgebreide collectie boeken geschonken aan de University of Cenderawasih in Irian Jaya. Het Centrum voor Studies van Australië en Oceanië ontving van Pouwer een groot aantal rapporten, dissertaties en manuscripten in bruikleen. Ze zijn te raadplegen in het documentatiecentrum. We zijn Jan Pouwer hiervoor erkentelijk. Een boek, geschonken door Pouwer, van Helmut Reim, 1962, Die Insektennahrung der australischen Ureinwohner (Berlin: Akademie Verlag) is in de bibliotheek Maatschappijwetenschappen van de KUN opgenomen.
